My writing partner is Bomani.
I will refer to him often.
Bomani and I challenged each other to tell a story from each of four points of view.
I wrote:
I received word from my agent that publishers are interested. My first response was tears, so I let myself cry full out for twenty-seconds and then shouted, “I should be celebrating, but I cry?” Then I looked at the contract attached to the email. Clearly, this will take some thinking.
You never know what you’re going to find in your email. You open the first one and see a note from your agent that publishers are interested and there’s a contract attached. You think, “Good grief!” and then you cry for a minute, and then you read the contract. Maybe this deal isn’t as good it gets. You know you have to do some research, maybe a LOT of research.
She opened the email and read the agent’s note which conveyed that four publishers are reviewing the manuscript. A fifth sent a contract which was attached to the agent’s email. First she cried, and then she reviewed the contract. The agenda for her day changed. She would be printing out that contract and going over it line-by-line before replying to the agent.
She opened the email and read the note. She was surprised to see such action on the agent’s part, even more so on the parts of the publishers. Little did she know that behind the scenes, the agent has been vigorously lobbying for publication. Little did the agent know that the writer was moving toward a desire for more editing. Little did they both know that a bigger and better deal would come down the pike, if they could be patient and wait.
I enjoyed that!
